Temple, Texas

Located north of Austin, Temple is a wonderful mid-sized city that blends high tech with high touch. The economy here was once primarily based on agri-business and the Santa Fe Railroad. Now, Temple has become a medical mecca and blossoming bio-tech center.

The Bend O' The River was until recently a privately owned ranch that was once visited by dignitaries such as president Gerald Ford, Texas governor John Connally, and radio host Paul Harvey. In 2011 the land was donated to the city of Temple and is slated to become a botanical gardens and event center.

The Bend O' The River was until recently a privately owned ranch that was once visited by dignitaries such as president Gerald Ford, Texas governor John Connally, and radio host Paul Harvey. In 2011 the land was donated to the city of Temple and is slated to become a botanical gardens and event center.

  • Corn grinding at the annual Early Days show.
  • Tractor parade at the annual Early Days event. Named for the town of Plymouth, Ohio, this tractor eventually was forced to change its name due to a legal battle with Chrysler who produced the Plymouth automobile. The tractor became the "Silver King" in the mid 1930's.
  • My back yard. <br /> I know that many photographers, such as myself, find it easier to locate interesting things to photograph while traveling to new locations, especially iconic National Parks. <br /> This image is part of my challenge for myself to find that same beauty and interest here at home. What better place to start than my own back yard...
  • Feed and grain silos at the railroad. Jupe Feeds is a family owned business with the milling operations located in Temple.

  • Dotty, a fire and rescue mascot, is feeling the love.
  • Santa Fe Railroad Depot and Train Museum. Previously marked for demolition, the depot was restored with a grant in the late 1990's. The museum seeks to educate and entertain audiences regarding local and regional railroad history through its exhibits, collections, and programs.

  • Old Santa Fe Railroad hospital. It was originally founded in 1891 as a hospital for Santa Fe Railroad employees. It is now a part of the Scott & White Healthcare System.
  • In The Mood Ballroom, located in the down town district, is decorated for the city's Halloween celebration. Owned and operated by dance instructors Rudy and Karen Gonzales since 1999, the building has existed in many forms since its beginnings in the late 1800's.
  • The Arcadia Theater. Built in 1928, it was the venue for silent movies and live performances including Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. It finally closed its doors in 1978.
